Terryl Martin is on the PSP board of trustees and she mentors three scholars in the Lennox area. We spoke with Terryl about her time with PSP and why she’s inspired by the scholars in PSP.
Ms. Martin hopes that the experiences that scholars have with PSP inspire them to volunteer in the future and give back to students just like them. She loves seeing former scholars come back and mentor current PSP scholars.
Terryl said that she’s “grateful for the opportunity to participate in PSP” and that she has her scholars. “They teach me as much as I teach them,” she said.
Ms. Martin first learned about PSP from our board chair Meg Sanchez. They are in the same book club and Ms. Sanchez suggested that Ms. Martin become a mentor with the program. She was a mentor for several years before she decided to join the board.
Ms. Martin shares that she had several mentors in her personal and professional life. She met mentors through social organizations and some mentors that worked within her company. She says she’s “definitely a believer in the power of mentoring.” She demonstrates that in her life by working with three scholars in PSP.
Ms. Martin is able to balance her professional career with her duties as a board member and as a mentor. She says that there are so many experiences that are memorable with her scholars and it’s hard to choose one favorite. She is now mentoring a second set of scholars because she had such a wonderful experience mentoring in the past. With her first group of scholars, Terryl went on a trip to New York city for a trip filled with firsts! Two of her scholars had never been outside of the state or on a plane. She was happy to experience this with them and they got to learn about traveling, tipping in restaurants and being aware of their surroundings. The group also visited Columbia and New York University.
She’s also enjoyed experiences like going to concerts with her scholars. They recently went to see the popular musician Ed Sheeran and she says her scholars “were super excited about that.” Ms. Martin takes into account the interests of her scholars as she’s taken them indoor rock climbing which she says, “was terrifying but they enjoyed it immensely.”
Ms. Martin has high hopes for all the scholars in the program. She enjoys mentoring and spending time with her scholars and she enjoys working with the board to benefit all scholars in the program. She says that it’s rewarding to be champion for the scholars and make sure that they have the opportunities to experience things that will ensure they have a successful college career. She loves to hear how PSP has impacted students and to see how appreciative they are for the opportunities they’ve been given.
