PSP’s New Scholars First Outings

PSP welcomed new 7th grade scholars from Lennox into the program in late January. These scholars have been matched with caring mentors all of them have now participated in their first PSP outing!

PSP Scholars & Mentors Cheer on the Trojans!

PSP thanks all our mentors for providing unique and enriching experiences for their students. Long-time PSP mentors Dr. and Mrs. Mark and Barb Lurie regularly put together events that our scholars and their mentors can enjoy as a group. Most recently they organized a tour of the USC campus and athletic facilities for PSP scholars and mentors, followed by a USC men’s basketball game at the Galen Center on February 17th, 2018. They were joined by PSP alumni, current mentor, and USC alum Jesus Herrera who joined the group for campus tour.

PSP Scholars’ Summer Camp Experiences

Partnership Scholars Program encourages scholars to take advantage of their summer break by participating in academic and enrichment summer programs and this is the time of year when they start planning for the coming summer. We asked the scholars that participated in summer programs last year to share their experiences with us and they also recommend programs to scholars for this summer. These programs range from the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth to Camp Mendocino and ballet programs.

Fort Bragg Art Workshops

PSP Mentors Carolyn Schneider and Ms. Rachel Binah are artists in the Fort Bragg community. They hosted Fort Bragg scholars  Kenlly, Miciella, Javier, Fernanda, and  Jasmin at Ms. Schneider’s studio for two art workshops. Our scholars have been inspired by having an outlet for their creativity and their amazing artistic skills. We are grateful that we have mentors that provide such unique and enriching experiences for our scholars.

PSP Alumna Giving Back

Cristina Ayala is an alumna of PSP, class of 2016. She now attends UC Merced and is the Vice President of Operations for an on campus organization called Generation to Generation. The organization’s mission is to enlighten and guide Merced youth through mentoring, resources, and educational workshops that promote their development.

As a part of Generation to Generation, she helps put on an event called “UC Merced Splash”. The goal of Splash is to expose students to the college environment and learn more about academics, clubs, and speak with current college students. A number of current PSP scholars will be attending Splash this year, thanks to Cristina’s relationship with PSP.

El Monte Class of 2023

On January 31, 2018 we welcomed seven new 7th grade students from El Monte into PSP. They join eight students from Lennox to complete our class of 2023 cohort.

We celebrated the seven new El Monte scholars with community leaders, school staff and administration, current and PSP alumni.
