Celebrating the Class of 2020!

June 17, 2020 in Uncategorized by Lisa Ruben

On Sunday June 14, PSP’s class of 2020 celebrated their high school success and continuation to college with family, friends, mentors, board members, donors and staff through a virtual, live ceremony. Seeing the faces of so many people who make PSP the strong community that it is – scholars, mentors, parents, donors and friends from across California – brought home the strength of our inter-connectedness, even when we meet online instead of in real life.

Over the past few months, the students in PSP’s class of 2020 have had to grapple with unforeseen challenges. The health pandemic has changed all our lives since last March. But with the guidance of their parents and PSP mentors, every graduate handled these challenges with grace and successfully completed high school and made the choice to continue their education.

PSP’s Board Chair Ray Andry had inspiring words for the graduates. “The young men and women who have participated in this program are our social justice advocates,” Ray shared, “Today you join that amazing group of individuals who have come through the Partner Scholarship Program – who are going to change the world.”

Mentors also congratulated the scholars and shared words of wisdom. Rachel Binah, the site coordinator from the North Coast region, encouraged students to “Be yourself – everyone else is taken.”

Scholars introduced themselves and shared their highlights from the past six years in the program, including college trips in the East Coast to outings to sports events.

One scholar from each region was selected to share in-depth about their PSP experience. Alexis from El Monte, Angel from Lennox, Cecilia from Ukiah and Liliana from Fort Bragg expressed intense pride and appreciation for their PSP mentors and family. There were definitely tears of joy!

Partnership Scholars is grateful to our donors and mentors who make all of this happen. And to the parents who have lovingly trusted us by allowing their children to participate in this program.

Lastly, PSP is honored and appreciative of the scholars themselves.  We are cheering them on and looking forward to hear of all of their successes. We know it won’t be easy, but as we have seen, they can achieve anything they put their minds to.

A Statement of Support and Hope

June 10, 2020 in Uncategorized by Lisa Ruben

The murder of George Floyd, following the killings of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and the many other Black people going back generations, has sparked protest around the globe and in our home cities. We at PSP share your struggle with the intense feelings that these killings bring up – heartbreak, anger, fear, helplessness. My hope for our world is that this moment will be one step a path that ends in true and swift reform of our culture and institutions so that not one more life will be taken.

Partnership Scholars Program was founded in the belief that every child has a right to an education and that no child should be limited by their environment. We believe that everyone must have the opportunity to achieve their goals and create the life they want to live. Without equity and true justice that goal can never be achieved.

At our core PSP wants our community of students, volunteers and alumni to feel safe; to have hope for the future; to live in a world that is just. We believe that Black lives matter and that the arbitrary killing of Black and Brown people is the true injustice in our world. We’ll continue to seek equity by lifting up PSP students and mentors as they contribute to creating a better world.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

                        – Martin Luther King, Jr, Letter from a Birmingham Jail

All of us at PSP are committed to fighting injustice and oppression, and creating equal opportunity for all. In our staff and board meetings, we’ll be asking ourselves how we can embody an anti-racist and anti-discriminatory philosophy in all our work.

Meeting Student Needs during COVID 19

April 6, 2020 in Uncategorized by Lisa Ruben

Even as we all need to continue staying physically away from one another, PSP is still here for our community of students, mentors and families. Our team is working our regular schedule from home, and can still be reached at our regular phone and email addresses.

PSP administered a student poll as the school shut downs began to find out what their most urgent needs were. There were three themes in student responses:

  • the need for more academic support (like tutoring, help with keeping up on deadlines),
  • the need for more technology for remote learning
  • and more ways to build personal connections with mentors and fellow scholars.

A number of students also shared concerns about the well-being of their family in terms of health and job status.

Based on this input, PSP is making some changes to help us better support scholars and mentors during this time.

We will also be hosting monthly mentor sessions online. Please reach out to us with any questions about how PSP continues to serve students during this time.

Supporting the PSP Community

March 17, 2020 in Uncategorized by Lisa Ruben

With the rapid spread of COVID-19, we are reminded of the need to take care of our communities, families and ourselves.  The PSP staff has compiled two sets of resources to provide information and direct help to our community members. Please feel free to share these with anyone else you think may find them helpful.

  • We have created a Community Resources page to provide links to a variety of help – from unemployment information to free meal sites to guidance on addressing the anxiety that many of us feel right now. The document is split into 5 sections to help you find the resources in your own community: California, El Monte, Lennox, Fort Bragg/Mendocino and Ukiah. We will continue to update it, so check back regularly. You’ll find it under our News & Events page menu.

  • We created a new page on the PSP website dedicated to ideas for virtual mentoring activities. As our leaders continue to call for social distancing, PSP is committed to sustaining mentoring relationships. This new page provides links to activities that mentors and scholars can use to continue your monthly (or more) engagement by phone, video call or text. Facebook messenger, Zoom, Skype and Google Hangout are all great ways to see each other during our break from in-person gatherings.

  • PSP will reimburse current PSP scholars and mentors for supplies needed to complete school work at home, or to do any virtual mentoring activities. To maintain social distancing that supports community-wide health, you should be buying those supplies online, instead of going out to stores. We have suspended all in-person mentoring activities through March 31. I’ll be back in touch with new information that will when that date comes closer.

  • To protect the health of PSP employees, we will be working from home until at least March 31. You can still reach us by phone, email and by text.

It is times like this that reinforce the importance of community connections and emphasize our interdependence on one another.  Thank you for all that you do.  We will continue to be here for you.

Eight new 7th grade scholars join PSP at induction ceremony

Partnership Scholars Program started the New Year in high spirits as we inducted eight new students from El Monte into PSP’s Class of 2025 cohort. Board members, donors, alumni, current scholars, and the principal and staff members of Charles T. Kranz Intermediate School joined the PSP community to celebrate this momentous event for all the new students.

Before the new 7th grade scholars were presented, we heard from the current 8th grade scholars, who shared their experience and advice from the past year. With guidance from Kranz teacher and long-time PSP mentor Camille Osburn, the students created presenations that they shared – along with laughs and advice for PSP’s newest students.

Introducing the PSP Class of 2025, Lennox Cohort

December 9, 2019 in Uncategorized by Lisa Ruben

Partnership Scholars Program had the pleasure of introducing the newest PSP Scholars to the larger Lennox community at an induction ceremony on a rainy November night. Board members, school staff, PSP alumni, donors, families, mentors and current scholars celebrated these eight new students.

You can read what each student wrote about joining PSP at the end of this piece.

Angel, a current PSP Scholar now in his senior year at Animo Leadership Charter High School,  imparted advice to new students and shared his experience thus far in the program.  Calling PSP “a once in a life time milestone,” Angel emphasized five benefits of being part of PSP, including financial assistance, cultural awareness, personal growth, mentorship, and collegial awareness. Scholars & Mentors Gather to Welcome Fall and the College Season

November 13, 2019 in Uncategorized by Lisa Ruben

This year PSP is introducing a new component to our programming: Community Gatherings. These Gatherings will be held  four times per year at each of our Southern California sites. The vision for these gatherings is to build a stronger community by bringing together students and mentors for shared learning and to strengthen their mentoring relationships. PSP held our first Community Gatherings in Lennox and El Monte just before Halloween.

With over 100 scholars and mentors in attendance at the meetings, PSP led college exploration workshops differentiated by grade level. Eighth and ninth-grade attendees learned about the importance of visiting colleges and preparing for high school success. Sophomores and juniors gained an understanding of why college fit is important and how to leverage fly-in programs to their advantage. Seniors received application support and solidified their college list. (You can review & download materials after the jump.)

As Halloween was around the corner, mentors and students divided into teams to compete for the best decorated pumpkins title. It was an evening filled with creativity, knowledge, and community.

Students Get Ready for College Application Season at 2019 College Success Retreat

August 22, 2019 in Uncategorized by Lisa Ruben

Students are back in school now, embarking on a new year of learning. For many, this is just a continuation of their summer efforts. This July, 55 PSP students and mentors got an early start on learning how to navigate the complicated college and financial aid application processes.

These dedicated students, along with their volunteer mentors, spent three days at Loyola Marymount University, sleeping in dorms, eating in the cafeteria and attending intensive workshops.

Every year students tell us how much this retreat helps them feel truly ready to apply to college and unravel their financial aid options. Hear for yourself!

We couldn’t offer this intensive college-preparation retreat, or any of our other services, without partners like you. Give today to support students throughout the school year.

Students at the 2019 retreat learned about the college admissions process, financial aid and standardized testing. They began to work on their personal statements for the U.C. system and private universities, explored career paths and met with PSP alumni who shared their own college experiences and advice.

LA Times Tribute to Dr. Glenn Langer

July 2, 2019 in Uncategorized by Lisa Ruben

The Los Angeles Times posted a moving tribute to Partnership Scholars Program founder Dr. Glenn Langer this week. Below are some excerpts from the story about his life and legacy. We are honored to carry his legacy forward into the future.

Glenn Langer, the cardiologist who helped disadvantaged students attend college, dies at 91

When Glenn Langer retired as head of the UCLA’s cardiovascular research lab in 1997, he dipped into his retirement savings to buy books, calculators and tickets to museums and theaters.

Not for himself, but for disadvantaged students at Lennox Middle School.

Years earlier, during a visit to the school’s science fair, Langer had been impressed by the studious and motivated youngsters from the community east of Los Angeles International Airport. But he was saddened to know that less than 15% of the students from Lennox would go to college. So he decided to do something about it. Read the rest of this entry →

We Mourn the Passing of PSP Founder Dr. Glenn Langer

June 26, 2019 in Uncategorized by Lisa Ruben

The Partnership Scholars Program community is deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. Glenn Langer, our founder and long-time leader. Anyone who met Glenn immediately felt the power of his personality and his passion for creating a better world than the one he entered. With his creation of Partnership Scholars Program in in 1996, Dr. Langer took a simple idea and created a lasting legacy across California. In founding PSP, Dr. Langer and his late wife Marianne together created opportunities for more than 600 students to date to achieve their dreams of college and lifetime success.

Dr. Langer grew up in the Great Depression, an experience that firmly shaped his world view. As he wrote in in his 2004 memoir, “I firmly believe that had I not been lucky enough to be born and live in the United States of America, I would not have graduated from college, gone on to medical school and then had all the options and opportunities which that education provided. It is this belief which prompted me to establish a pre-college education program here in California… Our goal is to break the cycle of poverty and social discrimination and allow our talented ‘Scholars’ to develop to their full potential…”

He brought that vision to life nearly 25 years ago and it remains a strong force today in the PSP communities of Lennox, El Monte and Hawthorne in Southern California, and in Fort Bragg, Mendocino and Ukiah in Northern California.

At Dr. Langer’s request, there will not be a funeral ceremony. His wife has asked that any  cards and memorial gifts be directed to Partnership Scholars Program, PO Box 156, El Segundo, CA 90245 or online here.

Our wishes for peace and comfort go out to Dr. Langer’s family.

Please read on for Dr. Langer’s full obituary, demonstrating his far-reaching impact and legacy.
