This page offers a variety of resources to support families during the new and changing economics of during this coronavirus pandemic.

It is divided into sections for each of the four major regions that PSP serves: El Monte, Lennox, Fort Bragg/Mendocino and Ukiah plus a section that shows resources being made available across California.

STATE-WIDE/CALIFORNIA

For College Students: 

  • Swipe Out Hunger has compiled resources for college students affected by COVID 19. This page includes links to resources for food, storage (e.g. if you have to move off campus), housing and more. 
  • Resources for Student Loan Borrowers : The Institute for College Access & Success regularly updates this with new tools & advice for students impacted by the Coronavirus.

Stimulus Checks from the U.S. Government

Stimulus checks (“Economic Impact Payments”) will start arriving the week of April 13, according to the IRS. The IRS will rely on either your 2018 or 2019 tax return to determine the amount of your check. For those who don’t normally file, the IRS has set up an online tool to register and determine eligibility.

  • This article provides step-by-step instructions to get your stimulus check faster. It helps people who don’t regularly file a tax return. Examples are people who aren’t required to file a federal tax return or who earn below a certain annual income threshold such as $12,200 for individuals and $24,400 for married couples.  

Internet:

  • Multiple Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have made updates to their low-cost internet service programs to ensure individuals and families stay connected to the internet during this challenging time. Here’s a list of low-cost internet service options tool to reflect these changes. 
  • Here is a second list of free and low cost internet options from the CA Department of Education. 
  • Verizon will waive late fees for 60 days from March 16, 2020 to May 13, 2020, and will not terminate service to a customer who’s been impacted by the events involving the Coronavirus. Click here to learn more.

Housing:

  • STUDENTS/ FOSTER YOUTH: If you are or know of a foster youth that is staying at a college dorm room that is going to be closed due to the coronavirus, please email info@togetherwerise.org  and they will provide or help you find housing during this transition.

Employment:

Paid Family Leave: 

**Paid family leave is available for those who stay home because they need to take care of someone who has contracted the virus (Covid-19) or who has been quarantined (must be certified by a medical professional). Learn how to file a Paid Family Leave Claim HERE.

Disability Benefits/Paid Sick Leave

**Disability benefits /paid sick leave are available for those who have actually contracted the virus themselves or who have been exposed to it and are quarantined (must be certified by a medical professional in the case of Disability Benefits). Learn how to file a Disability Insurance Claim HERE

Unemployment Benefits

**Unemployment benefits are available to those whose hours have been reduced or who have lost their job due to coronavirus measures (and it also applies to those who choose to stay home due to underlying health issues making them more vulnerable). The Governor has waived the 1 week wait time and the person may not be required to be actively looking for work (as is usually required). Learn how to file an Unemployment Insurance Claim HERE

    • Unfortunately though, this benefit is not available to undocumented persons whose hours are reduced or lose their job for reasons related to COVID-19, etc.
    • SCHOOL CLOSURES: If your child’s school is closed and you have to miss work to care for them. You might qualify for Unemployment Insurance benefits. Learn how to file an Unemployment Insurance Claim HERE

Workers Compensation: 

**Worker’s comp is available for those who are unable to do their usual job because they were exposed to and contracted Covid-19 while in the regular course of their job (i.e. healthcare workers)

Taxes: 

Directly from the Employment Development Department: “Employers experiencing a hardship as a result of COVID-19 may request up to a 60-day extension of time from the EDD to file their state payroll reports and/or deposit state payroll taxes without penalty or interest. A written request for extension must be received within 60 days from the original delinquent date of the payment or return.

For questions, employers may call the EDD Taxpayer Assistance Center.

Domestic Violence: If you are concerned about being quarantined in an unsafe home situation or need help, all DV shelter resources are generally available on: domesticshelters.org.

The National Domestic Violence Hotline is also available 24/7 at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-787-3223 (TTY)

Utilities: 

WIC: 

  • WIC clinics under South Los Angeles Health Projects will remain open to the community. We will be remotely issuing participants food benefits onto their WIC cards to avoid families from going out given our COVID-19 pandemic. For those families that have not yet gotten the new WIC card and wish to locate the nearest WIC clinic to them please call or visit the following website for further guidance and assistance:

EL MONTE

FREE MEALS AVAILABLE DURING SCHOOL CLOSURE

March 16 through March 27 Mountain View School District and neighboring school districts will provide free breakfast and lunch to children 18 and younger at pick-up sites across El Monte.

During the two week period of school closure, breakfast and lunch “Grab-and-go” meals for all community members 18 years of age and younger will be available between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. at the following schools throughout El Monte and South El Monte:

LENNOX

FREE MEALS AVAILABLE DURING SCHOOL CLOSURE

Lennox School District Child Nutrition Services will provide an opportunity for families to pick up breakfast and lunch for the following days in a mobile walk up or drive-thru meal service for children 18 and under. This will occur on Monday, March 16th – March 27th at all seven school sites from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm.

These meals will be available for free for anyone 18 and under regardless of what school they attend. No paperwork is required. Children must be present in order for meals to be provided. Meals will be provided based on the number of children present.

The Mendocino Voice posted an article listing the free and low cost services that businesses and non-profits in Ukiah and Mendocino are providing. 

 

UKIAH

Food: 

  • Ukiah schools will continue to provide drive-thru/carryout breakfasts and lunches to students during this unprecedented crisis beginning Tuesday, March 17, 2020.

Social-Emotional Support

If students are struggling with emotional overwhelm, mental health challenges, or safety issues due to the suspension of site-based instruction, Ukiah Unified Schools counselors are available during this time.  More information will be available soon on the UUSD website about how to contact them.
